5 steps to aged care

Accessing Care

To ensure you or your loved one can access care, please see some steps below.

Arms

1. Aged Care Client Record

Ensure your Aged Care Client Record is up-to-date (post-July 2014) and approved for Residential Aged Care. This approval is crucial for accessing the necessary services. If your record does not meet these requirements, or if the approval has lapsed, immediate action is needed. Contact your local Aged Care Access Centre on 1800 942 433. The staff there can assist you in arranging a new assessment or updating your current record to ensure it meets the required standards. Keeping your record current and properly approved is essential for maintaining uninterrupted access to residential aged care services. Don’t wait until the last minute; check your record now and make any necessary updates to stay compliant and ensure continuous care.

2. Combined Asset & Income Assessment

Complete a Combined Asset & Income Assessment and send it through to Centrelink. The address details are provided on the back of the booklet. Please also retain a copy for your records. I recommend completing this as soon as possible, as it can sometimes take up to eight weeks to receive a reply. More information regarding Accommodation Fees and Charges can be found in the Fees and Charges section of the website. If you do not understand any of the information regarding finance, our CFO is available to assist you in understanding the options. We recommend seeking financial advice from a Financial Adviser that specialises in aged care.

According to legislative provisions, a provider may ask a resident to leave if:

  1. The aged care service is closing.

  2. The service can no longer provide suitable accommodation and care aligned with the resident's long-term assessed needs, and the provider hasn't agreed to provide the required care following changes in the resident's needs.

  3. An Aged Care Assessment Team (ACAT) assesses that the resident no longer requires the care provided by the service.

  4. The resident fails to pay any agreed fees within 42 days after the due date for reasons within their control.

  5. The resident intentionally causes serious damage to the aged care service or serious injury to the provider, staff, or another resident.

  6. The resident is absent from the service for at least seven days continuously without permission as per the Act or due to an emergency.

Fees & Charges

The cost of your accommodation in aged care at Orana Gardens depends on your financial circumstances. The Australian Government covers most aged care costs, but you may need to contribute.

  1. Basic Daily Fee: This covers living expenses like meals and cleaning. It's up to 85% of the single-person rate of the basic age pension, applicable even for couples.

  2. Means Tested Care Fee: Additional contribution based on your income and assets, with annual and lifetime caps.

  3. Accommodation Payments: The government may cover some or all of these costs, or you may pay an agreed-upon price based on your financial assessment. Options include a refundable deposit, a daily payment, or a combination.

At Orana Gardens, maximum accommodation prices range from $250,000 for a double room to $550,000 for a couples retreat, with detailed financial assessments handled by Centrelink or the Department of Veteran’s Affairs.
